Filmetrics “Taking the Mystery out of Thickness Measurements”
Filmetrics features a full line of UV-NIR spectrometer systems for measuring thickness (from 30 Å to 450 µm) and optical properties of thin films. These affordable systems are faster, easier-touse, and less expensive than conventional instruments. Filmetrics has also created an easy to understand guide entitled “Taking the Mystery out of Thin-Film Measurement”. After a short introduction to thin-film technology, the guide starts to break down the complexities behind spectral reflectance for both single layer films as well as multiple layer film stacks and the interactions of thickness measurements with optical constants. It also provides details on how to determine film properties using spectral reflectance, comparing the use of spectroscopic reflectance versus ellipsometry. E-mail Filmetrics at to request a copy so that you too can understand the principles behind spectral reflectance.

Goodfellow Corporation High-Performance Polymer Materials
The Goodfellow Corporation catalog is available on CDROM. To get your free copy, send an e-mail with the words “CD-ROM Catalog” in the subject line. Many high performance materials are available. Polyphenylsulphone (PPSu) has recently been added to our range of polymer materials. Available from stock in a range of rod sizes from 12.7 mm to 40 mm diameter, this material is being used in various sectors, including the manufacture of medical devices. Other sizes and forms, including sheet, are available and will be added to the catalog in time. Polyphenylsulphone (PPSu) is an amorphous, high performance thermoplastic which offers better chemical and impact resistance than either polysulphone or polyetherimide. It offers superior hydrolysis resistance when compared to other amorphous thermoplastics (measured by steam autoclaving cycles to failure). PPSu has virtually unlimited steam sterilizability, outlasting other materials by a factor of 40:1. This factor makes it an excellent choice for medical devices as steam autoclaves are widely used to sterilize these items. PPSu also resists common acids and bases including commercial washing solutions over a broad temperature range. Industrial applications include sterilization trays, dental and surgical instrument handles, hot water fittings & aircraft cabin interior components. Goodfellow supplies metals, alloys, ceramics, polymers and other materials to meet the research, development and specialist production requirements of science and industry worldwide.

IonBond PVD, CVD and PA-CVD Coatings and Coating Equipment Profile
IonBond is a supplier of high-end, state-of-the-art PVD, CVD and PA-CVD coatings and coating equipment. Our broad range of products for Components, Forming, Moulding and Cutting Tools as well as Decorative Elements and Medical Devices, bring our customers all the advantages of the Global Player while at the same time maintaining strong local contacts with our customers. IonBond offers a number of coatings for the plastics industry. Tools for the machining of the plastic parts are often exposed to severe wear and abrasion from glass fibre reinforced plastics, and IonBond’s coatings improve the productivity of such tools. Furthermore, the molds used to manufacture plastic parts are often subjected to abrasive or corrosive attack from the resins employed. Therefore, the adequate protection of these molds in order to minimize downtime and reduce production costs is of high importance. PVD, PA-CVD, or CVD Coatings such as metal nitrides and metal oxides are employed in a number of applications for wear protection. Beside chemical inertness and wear resistance resulting from elevated hardnesses (up to 3000 HV), PVD coatings offer high precision dimensional accuracy. Chrome nitride (CrN) based coating systems are especially suited for plastic applications. Examples for plastic molding applications include a multilayer Cr-CrN-coatings with a much higher coating thickness (up to 15 µm) for improved wear and corrosion protection, as well as IonBond CrN-CrO-coatings with improved anti-sticking properties. For the tribological wear problems resulting from metal-onmetal contact (ejector pins and valves), low friction DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) coatings such as Tribobond 40 (W-C:H) or Tribobond 41 (a-DLC) have proven to be excellent solutions. Combination treatments include nitriding plus a PVD-coating are common solutions for the plastics industry. Such solutions combine the protective function of a PVD coating with the added mechanical support and abrasion resistance provided by the nitriding process. The corrosion resistance of steel alloy 1.2316 for PVC applications will be not affected due to appropriate temperature choice during nitriding process.
